Pauahi dies
Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, born on December 19, 1831, died on October 16, 1884. In her will, she wrote that she wished for two schools to be made for students of Hawaiian blood.
"Pauahi witnessed the rapid decline of the Hawaiian population. With that decline came a loss of Hawaiian language, culture, and traditions. She believed education would offer her people hope and a future, so she left her estate — about nine percent of the total acreage of the Hawaiian kingdom — to found Kamehameha Schools."

Kamehameha Founded
On October 3, 1887, the formal opening cremony for the Kamehameha School for Boys took place at Kaiwiʻula. Future annexationist Sereno E. Bishop spoke the formal prayer.
"Kalākaua would celebrate hula; Sereno Bishop would degenerate hula. Confusion, conflict of cultural identity from day one at Kamehameha School." |
